Mentorship Crit: 3 Principles That Instantly Improve Character Design
Hey guys!
Today I wanted to share a critique session video I made for one of my mentorship students, Karnie.
Karnie was one of my students when I taught at Otis College of Art and Design, and they're now doing a mentorship with me this month! They're a super hard-working character designer & illustrator who will be graduating next year. Go check out their Instagram to see all of their amazing work!
In this session, we covered some key concepts for creating appealing character designs like:
simple vs complex
straight vs curved
rhythm and energy
I did some paint-overs of Karnie's work with tips on how to keep pushing design variation and creating dynamic poses. I also went over some quick tips on how to make a drawing look more finished✨
In my mentorship, I like to work with my students one-on-one by sending critique videos, doing paint-overs, and sharing lots of different art resources in addition to meeting with them once a week to go over any questions they might have.
If you're interested in starting a mentorship with me, feel free to fill out an application here. I'm expecting to have a couple seats opening up next month so I'll be emailing new applicants on a first come first serve basis!
Hope you enjoy the video!
